How to Prepare for KUCAT: What to Study and Where to Practice

No book recommendations, just what actually works. The KUCAT exam format, which subjects to practice, and where to find past papers by subject for PCM, PCB, and PMCs.

The question comes up every admission cycle: which book should I buy for the KU entrance? The honest answer is that no single book is necessary. KUCAT is a 120-question MCQ-based CBT, and the best preparation is practicing actual MCQs on the topics it covers, which is exactly what past papers give you.

Here is a breakdown of what the exam actually is, what to study, and where to find questions.

What KUCAT Actually Is

KUCAT (Kathmandu University Common Admission Test) is a computer-based test. You get two hours to answer 120 multiple-choice questions, split into three sections of 40 questions each, one per subject.

The format is adaptive. If you answer a question correctly, the next question gets harder. If you get it wrong, it gets easier. The difficulty goes from 1 to 5. This means your final score reflects not just how many you got right, but which difficulty level you reached.

The pass mark for School of Engineering programs is 528. For School of Science programs it is 480. You see your score immediately at the end of the test.

You sit the test in one of three subject groups depending on which program you are applying to:

  • PCM — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
  • PCB — Physics, Chemistry, Biology
  • PMCs — Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science

What KUCAT Tests

Each subject in KUCAT has exactly 40 topics in the syllabus, and one question comes from each topic. This is documented in KU’s official syllabus. The topics are distributed uniformly, so no single topic gets more weight than another.

The content is +2 level. Nothing beyond what you have already covered in Grade XI and XII. The Physics syllabus covers Mechanics, Heat and Thermodynamics, Electrostatics, DC Circuits, Magnetic Fields, and Modern Physics. Chemistry covers General and Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. Mathematics covers Calculus and Linear Algebra at the +2 level.

The students who struggle are usually the ones who try to “cover” new material rather than actually drilling the concepts they already studied.

Where to Practice

The subjects below are the first-semester KU courses labeled as 101 subjects. They are directly aligned with +2 level content and have the deepest archives on the site. These are also the same subjects that appear in the BSc Computer Science and BE Computer Engineering course catalogs as first-year foundation courses, shared across all engineering and science programs at KU.

PhysicsPhysics 101: Engineering Mechanics has 9 years and 25 papers. This is the core of what KUCAT tests for PCM and PCB: mechanics, dynamics, forces, work, energy.

ChemistryCHEM 101: General Chemistry has 8 years and 28 papers. Atomic structure, bonding, thermochemistry, equilibrium — the standard +2 general chemistry content.

MathematicsMath 101: Calculus and Linear Algebra has 8 years and 24 papers. Differentiation, integration, matrices, limits.

Biology (for PCB)BIOT 101: Introduction to Biotechnology has 6 years of papers covering cell biology, genetics, and biological systems.

Computer Science (for PMCs)Computer Science 101: Programming Fundamentals has 6 years of papers covering basic programming logic, data types, and computing concepts.

How to Use These Papers

Work through papers year by year rather than jumping around randomly. You will start noticing which topics repeat. Since KUCAT has exactly one question per topic and 40 topics per subject, pattern recognition across years is genuinely useful.

Do not skip questions you get wrong. Wrong answers on MCQs are more useful than correct ones. They tell you exactly which concept has not clicked yet.

Since KUCAT is adaptive, speed matters. If you answer the early questions quickly and correctly, you get to the higher difficulty questions, and those are where the higher scores come from. Practice under time pressure.

One Thing Biology-Stream Students Should Know

If you studied Biology at +2 and want to sit the PCM group instead of PCB, you need to have taken and passed Additional Mathematics. Without it, you are not eligible for PCM regardless of which program you are applying to. If you have not taken Add. Math, your option is PCB, so choose programs accordingly.

Is That Enough Preparation?

For most students, yes. The official syllabus has 40 topics per subject and one question per topic. Working through three to four years of past papers per subject covers nearly all of them. No book does this more efficiently than the actual past papers.

Consistency before July 9 matters more than the material you choose.
